Short Description: | Chelmsford Museum has Stage 1 Heritage Lottery Fund approval to develop a project to redisplay galleries, improve the infrastructure of the Victorian building and build a new café. We wish to recruit an experienced team to work with the Curators, Visitor Services and Learning Services Manager to secure a Stage 2 HLF pass, and go on to deliver an innovative and imaginative scheme to complement an extension which opened in 2010. The Council wishes to appoint four experienced and qualified consultants: Museum Design Consultant. A crucial appointment, liaising with the team to design new galleries within Chelmsford Museum (archaeology, natural history, decorative arts, costume, coins , childhood toys, and history of the Victorian House) . To co-ordinate all related aspects of the gallery design and installation, including new glass casing, graphics, mounting and construction, interactives, audio visuals and digital technology. The initial appointment will be to concept design. With Stage 2 approval, the designer would continue through to construction and use. Initial short-listing will be done on the basis of past work. Short-listed designers will be given £500 each to prepare a specific proposal for Chelmsford Museum & to present to an appointment panel. Quantity Surveyor. In the development Stage 1 phase, the Quantity Surveyor will work with the team to refine the implementation costs ready for submission to the HLF for Stage 2. During the Implementation Stage, the Quantity Surveyor will maintain the budget in association with Council Officers and the consultant team. Audience Development & Activity Plan Consultant. An experienced consultant who can work with the Museum Team and engage with current and potential visitors as well as stakeholders. The person will analyse existing research, including MOSAIC, set up two user fora, and ensure that feedback is fed into the design process. The person will plan a system for recruiting and training unpaid Volunteer Co-ordinators in order to improve the effectiveness and capability of volunteers. The post will also be responsible for the production, in conjunction with the Museum Team, of the Activity Plan that will form a key element in the Stage 2 submission to the HLF. A fixed fee is available for this appointment. M & E Engineer The project comprises the construction of a new café extension, the refurbishment of a disused gardeners cottage, improvements to the Grade 2 listed Victorian House (including new boiler and heating, LED lighting, new BMS, and ICT Cat 5 wiring), and new gallery displays, including use of digital technology such as touch screens, and cam feeds to external bird and bat boxes). The engineer will feed concept designs and costs into the Stage 2 application to the HLF, and may be re-employed for implementation.
