Netflix star Marie Kondo has captured the attention of viewers all over the world with her “KonMari” method.
The TV series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” has inspired many to transform their cluttered homes into tranquil and organised spaces.
The method is “about choosing joy” and can be applied to pretty much anything – including procurement.
We look over some of the basic rules attached to the KonMari method below.
Commit yourself to tidying up
The first rule of the KonMari method is committing to the cause. Marie Kondo believes that those using the method must get rid of the things that are no longer of use to them and must keep only the things that “spark joy”.
In her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising, Marie Kondo said, “people cannot change their habits without first changing their way of thinking.”
Committing to tidying up your procurement strategy may help your business to apply the method in other areas – helping it to grow across the board.
Imagine your ideal strategy
This second step is to imagine what your ideal strategy would look like.
This blue sky thinking approach will motivate you moving forward but will also keep you in check as you will be thinking more about what your organisation needs rather than just what it wants.
Create a checklist of what you want to achieve and get your team involved, Collaboration may even speed up the process!
Think category
The KonMari method works by category. Your procurement strategy may not need much work, but there may be a specific section within it that does.
Don’t dive in when tidying up your procurement strategy. Instead, work through it category by category. For example, your DPS module may not offer your organisation what it needs, so start there and don’t move on until you are happy!
Is your procurement solution sparking joy?
This begs the question, are you happy with your procurement strategy? If there are elements that are not currently working for your organisation, it may be time to consider another solution or eProcurement modules.
You don’t need to get rid of your strategy completely, but it may be time to stand back and assess what your organisation needs to help it move forward.
